SEO Testing Results: What Actually Works?

Real Data Over Marketing Hype
The SEO industry is awash with advice, best practices, gurus, and “guaranteed” strategies. But how many digital marketing agencies actually test their recommendations?
At Wiser IT, we like to put common Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) wisdom to the test and let the data do the talking.
Rather than relying solely on word of mouth or third-party tools like SEMRush, Ahrefs, or UberSuggest to define our SEO strategy & results, we created three real websites, tracked their rankings from their inception, and documented every action we took. The results? Eye-opening insights that challenge some conventional SEO wisdom and reveal what truly moves the needle in search rankings.
Our SEO Testing Methodology
We built three distinct test websites from scratch using previously unused domains, each targeting completely different niches and keyword difficulties. Every site started unranked in Google with zero domain authority, and we carefully documented each SEO intervention, from content creation to backlink building. This wasn’t theoretical – these were real domains with real content, competing in real search results, and one of which has subsequently turned into a profitable business too.
Also, this exercise was, at least initially, purely about rankings, not traffic; it was not about optimising for AI (AOI) overviews or Generative Engine (GEO) particularly, more about websites ranking for raw keywords and phrases. It was done on a very low budget, but as you will see, one site managed to gain enough traffic to build a business!
Test 1: Entity Management UK – The Power of Exact Match Domains
The Setup
Domain: entity-management.co.uk

Launch Date: 18 May 2025
Target Keywords: Entity management related terms (low competition, 0-110 monthly searches)
Best Ranking
#1

Project Timeline:

Key Findings
This test produced our most dramatic result. The keyword “entity management uk” – which has zero monthly search volume according to keyword tools – went from unranked (outside top 100) to position #1 in just 4 weeks after we added blog content.
What’s particularly interesting is that this happened despite the blog content being admittedly poor quality AI-generated material. The domain name itself appeared to carry significant weight. An exact-match domain (or in this case, a partial exact match with the .co.uk extension) gave us an immediate advantage.
Other keywords showed more modest improvements, with “corporate entity management” reaching position #14 and “entity management software” briefly hitting #27 before fluctuating. The pattern was clear: even basic SEO efforts could achieve rankings for low-competition terms, especially when supported by a relevant domain name.
Test 2: Dog Transport UK – Playing the Long Game
The Setup
Domain: dog-transport.co.uk

Launch Date: 26 November 2024
Target Keywords: Dog transport & related services (medium to high competition, 10-590 monthly searches)

Key Findings
This test demonstrated the importance of patience and consistent effort. Unlike the entity management site, these keywords faced medium to high competition, which meant results took significantly longer to materialise.
The star performer was “dog transport uk” (260 monthly searches, medium competition), which climbed from outside the top 100 to position #1 over 10 months. The progression was methodical: first appearing at position #9 in May 2025, then #2 by July, and finally claiming the top spot by September 2025.
The higher-volume, high-competition term “dog transport” (590 monthly searches) proved more challenging, reaching #31 at its best. This highlighted an important reality: even with good SEO practices, some keywords remain difficult to rank for without substantial authority and resources.
Notably, the lower-volume term “dog transport service uk” (just 10 monthly searches) reached position #3, reinforcing our hypothesis that lower-volume keywords are significantly easier to rank for.
And this website was more than just a test; it has since become a profitable business venture for business owner Graham Birch. After the initial setup, Graham was actively involved in posting to social media, which has also helped not only the website rankings but the visibility of the site and ultimately, this, coupled with Graham’s excellent Dog Transport service, has led to this being a very successful business.
Test 3: Cleaning Quote UK – The Links Effect
The Setup
Domain: cleaning-quote.co.uk

Launch Date: 4 June 2025
Target Keywords: Cleaning quote services (low to medium competition, 0-1,000 monthly searches)
Best Ranking
#1
Timeframe
16 weeks

Key Findings
This test was particularly revealing about the power of both internal links and backlinks. The zero-volume keyword “industrial cleaning quotes” achieved position #1 within just 12 weeks, with most of that movement occurring after we built the backlinks.
What made this test unique was our simultaneous creation of content silo blog content and backlinks, making it difficult to separate their individual effects. However, the rapid ascent of “industrial cleaning quotes” from position #50 to #1 in just a few weeks strongly suggests backlinks were the primary driver, but the content structure also seemed to help. And we found that Kyle Roof’s techniques for this really helped us to plan and apply the website content and structure in a very methodical way..
“Office cleaning quotes” (110 monthly searches) showed volatile but impressive rankings, reaching as high as #6 before dropping back. This volatility is common with newer domains as Google assesses their authority.
Interestingly, the high-volume keywords “cleaning quotes” and “cleaning quote” (1,000 monthly searches each) remained stubbornly outside the top 100, despite the domain’s exact match. This reinforces that search volume often correlates with ranking difficulty, which can be seen in both the competition, but the cost per click in Google can be a good indicator of this too, of course..
We also ran Google Ads during this period, though we cannot definitively attribute ranking improvements to paid advertising. However, it appears that the increased traffic may have sent positive user signals to Google, as evidenced by the rise and fall of rankings for terms like “window cleaning quotes” and “office cleaning quotes”, both of which gained substantial traction in paid ads, and also organically at the same time.
Validated SEO Principles: What Actually Works
- Exact-match and keyword-rich domains provide a genuine advantage – All three tests used domains containing target keywords, and in each case, we achieved first-page rankings for those exact terms. The domain URL isn’t just a label; it’s a ranking signal.
- Low-volume keywords are significantly easier to rank for – Keywords with 0-50 monthly searches consistently reached top positions faster than higher-volume terms. If you’re starting out, targeting these “long-tail” keywords is a smart strategy.
- Blog content demonstrably improves rankings – Every site showed ranking improvements after adding blog content. Even poor-quality AI content moved the needle, though we don’t recommend this approach for long-term success.
- Backlinks remain a powerful ranking factor – The cleaning quote site’s rapid ascent after backlink creation, and the dog transport site’s steady climb with ongoing link building, both confirm that backlinks are not dead. They’re alive and well as a ranking signal.
- Patience is not optional – For competitive terms, you need to think in months, not weeks. The dog transport site took 10 months to reach #1 for its main keyword. SEO is a marathon, not a sprint.
- Competition level matters more than search volume – A 1,000 search volume keyword with low competition might be easier to rank for than a 50 search volume keyword with high competition. Always check the competitive landscape.
The Bottom Line
These tests validate much of what SEO experts have been saying, but with real evidence rather than speculation. The fundamentals work: relevant domains, quality content, strategic backlinks, and time all contribute to ranking success.
However, our tests also revealed an uncomfortable truth: there are no shortcuts. The sites that performed best were those we worked on consistently over months, not weeks. Quick wins are possible with low-competition keywords, but sustainable, valuable traffic requires sustained effort.
At Wiser IT, we don’t just follow SEO best practices – we test them. These experiments prove that a data-driven, methodical approach to SEO delivers results. The question is: are you willing to put in the work?
What This Means for Your Business
If you’re considering SEO for your business, these findings should inform your strategy:
Start with winnable battles. Target low-competition, low-volume keywords first to build authority and momentum. Don’t immediately chase high-volume terms unless you have significant resources.
Invest in your domain. If possible, secure a domain that contains your primary keyword. It’s not everything, but it’s a genuine advantage.
Content is still king, but context is queen. Blog content helps, but it needs to be part of a broader strategy that includes technical SEO and link building.
Build links strategically. Focus on quality over quantity, and ensure (where possible) that backlinks are contextual and as relevant to your niche as possible.
Commit for the long haul. If you’re not willing to invest 6-12 months in your SEO strategy, you’re unlikely to see meaningful results for competitive terms, especially for national or international businesses.

Note: On 14th Sept 2025, Google killed off the &n=100 parameter in their API that allowed third-party SEO tracking software to deliver the top 100 search results, and many instead only now show the top 30 – hence ranking for some terms such as “dog taxi service” for Dog Transport UK appear to jump to position 30 in September but this keyword actually remained unranked for the purposes of this exercise.
